Situated in the heart of Saar, in a new compound right opposite to Saar Cinema (it’s the one with the DNA-looking fence, you can’t miss it), Villa Mamas turned out to be quite a delight with a Bahraini food menu that is hard to get outside of a “real mom’s” kitchen.

I’ve been suffering from movie-deprivation recently & I finally caught a break & went to see the February box office leader “Act of Valor”.
To sum up the film’s plot I’d put it this way: “Action unfolds for a group of Navy soldiers as a small rescue operation turns out to be bigger & riskier than what they bargained for. Fast-paced action with big explosions & some OMG moments.”
Every year Hollywood throws upon us a few US Airforce/Navy-centric movies that aim to praise the American way of life, its death-defying patriotic soldiers, & over the top Red, White & Blue moments. Now don’t get me wrong, some of my favorite & best movies ever made fall into that category. I’ve watched Saving Private Ryan countless times & just last year “War Horse” went all the way to the Oscars. However some movies just over do it. I felt that way about Act of Valor & here’s why…
If you are still reading & not discouraged then I’m gonna tell you what’s good about Act of Valor & what makes it stand out from the rest of the movies in its genre. One quote I liked by a viewer was “The Call of Duty movie that never was..”. That is true, the pace of the film, the way characters are introduced & plot unfolds gives a feeling you’re in a video game. Some beautiful ariel shots throughout the film & I think one of the most amazing things was the fact that Real US Navy members took part in the film, as well as the fact that the film was shot using a Canon SLR Camera!
I loved how each single member of the team was introduced with a rich backstory so you feel like you can relate to them, something most action films just seem to ignore. Act of Valor had some of the best jaw-dropping moments I’ve seen on the big screen but I just couldn’t shake the feeling that the movie is trying too hard which kinda made me feel disconnected at times. But I can totally understand now why such a movie would reign the box office in the US.
Final Verdict: 7/10

Chronicle is one of those movies that you better walk into without any idea whatsoever about the film’s plot or anything because for me I saw the trailer & went in which kinda spilled the whole plot. That being said, you may proceed reading my review of the film.
The plot revolves around 3 teenage highschool students who after a certain incident discover they have newfound super abilities. The teenagers chronicle their day to day life coping with these abilities. It felt like a cross-over between Tim Kring’s “Heroes” TV Series & J. J. Abrams “Cloverfield”.
Without going further into the plot I just wanna say that this is not your average superhero type of movie & NO I don’t mean it’s like Will Smith’s Hancock. The real life documentary type of shooting puts Chronicle in a class of its own. [Spoiler] The flying scenes were simply breathtaking. Superman WHO?! [Spoiler]
For superhero fanboys this film is a MUST & if you want to watch something interesting then you’ll be in for a ride as well! Nice take on adolescence & coming of age drama with a superhero twist. I give it 8/10!
ps. This post will be edited later with pics/videos once I’m back behind my laptop screen =)

Two studio kingdoms dueled over their competing Snow White projects, with director Tarsem facing the unenviable task of turning around his spin on the fairy tale in under a year, besting by more than three months Snow White and the Huntsman, the more grown-up version created by Rupert Sanders. The first trailer has stunned us with what appears to be an iffy combination of forced camp and a light Disney touch. If this were a “Top Model” photo shoot, I’d be wowed, but an apparently rushed and ill-conceived fairy tale twist from the director of The Fall, I’m on the side of the early detractors, sorry.

If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything - Alexander Hamilton
If you have been lucky enough to be born in the ’80s or before then you probably know or at least heard a thing or two about the infamous Alcatraz prison. For quick movie-history lesson you can refer to the highly acclaimed films made about the prison, The Rock & Escape from Alcatraz.
When Detective Rebecca Madsen is assigned to a grisly homicide case, a fingerprint leads her to a shocking suspect: Jack Sylvane, a former Alcatraz inmate who died decades ago. With her investigation impeded by government agent Emerson Hauser, Madsen teams up with Alcatraz expert and comic book enthusiast Dr. Diego Soto. They both soon discover that Sylvane is not only alive, but he’s loose on the streets of San Francisco, leaving bodies in his wake, and does not appear to age. With the inclusion of Agent Hauser, they realize that Sylvane is only a small part of a much larger, more sinister present-day threat. For while he may be the first, it quickly becomes clear that Sylvane won’t be the last prisoner to reappear from Alcatraz.

In recent years the drive towards mobility has been increasing rapidly. Without thinking consumers assume their latest gadget/laptop/tv/mobile would support such functionality from having your data stored remotely on the cloud, to being able to chat with friends & family from your iPad at home & continuing that conversation from your iPhone on the go, to being able to control your different connected devices with a simple gesture.
There are various products out there that cater to one need or another in that field. Today I’m gonna talk about the recently released “LogMeIn" Remote Control iOS App for PC/Mac.
LogMeIn is a software solution developed by the same name company. It offers you -the user- remote access over another machine making your life easier.
Recently the company has released its App for iOS devices. It is available for both iPhone, iPod & iPad devices. Here’s a brief description from the App store [App page link provided below]:
From your couch, on the train or in the air - get anytime, anywhere access to your PC or Mac.
You may ask what’s the big deal? Well, imagine yourself at work & you just remembered that you left a file you were working on at your home desktop OR you’re away on vacation & you get that urgent call from work asking you about some files that you had stored on your laptop OR if you’re like me “a recent HTPC owner” then you must have been searching left & right looking for the right remote control solution.
A quick look at the video embedded in the link below should give you a better idea.
Samsung is no stranger when it comes to innovation. In recent years they have surpassed Sony in the TV market & are giving leading camera & laptop makers a run for their money.
This year in CES 2012 “Consumer Electronics Shows 2012" they have once again introduced some truly innovative products, & built-up on what already was an excellent design. So here is just a summary of what to look forward to in 2012 from them.

Well not to brag but I’d like to think I know my food & movies pretty well. Plus being somewhat of a geek I’m highly into tech & gadgets especially Apple products =)
I’m not licensed to give marital or life advice but I would gladly share what I see fitting to the situation at hand.
That is what I kept telling myself for the past couple of years or so. Nevertheless, here I am again back at the blogging-seat!
I’ve had a good run in 2006-2007 back in the day of forums, sharing stories, giving out tips, making new friends but then after a while n00bs started pouring in & people lost interest. Around that time the facebook craze was sweeping the nation here in Bahrain so I jumped ship.
It was the age of Microblogging & it was beautiful. But nothing lasts. By 2009 & early 2010 facebook became a ghost town. The only notification you’d see on your wall is some random game-ville invite! And so I migrated to where the cool kids hung out… twitter was the answer! In June 2010 I started tweeting (@Ali_Fareed) about my 3 passions: Food, Movies&TV Series, Technology (not necessarily in that order) among other random daily encounters in life.
And so we’re back to square one. Why Blog when you can share a status, tweet, etc… Well honestly while I found tweeting really helps me sum up what I have to say in 140 characters or less, I do like to extensively talk about a new restaurant or review a film. Also if you’ve had a look at my timeline you can tell I like to tweet ALOT -some might say I spam- so more than often tweets would get buried down the timeline that would make it difficult to search for a review unless it was marked.
Here in my blog I intend to collectively share my reviews from my exploration visits of new restaurants & movie releases in town, various US TV series, gadgets & technology, video games & whatever else that comes to mind =)
I just would like to thank my dear friend Sabeeka Al Shamlan for it was her words long back then that got me going although she may no know it. “Ali Fareed Al Mufeed" she used to call me "Al Mufeed = Useful, Helpful" whenever I used to lend out my advice in different matters.
And for being a constant source of motivation I’d like to thank BahrainiPreneur, the reason I am sitting here again at the blogging seat.
